Trevor Rupe

Age: 33

Business: Parkway Advisors

Job title: Portfolio Manager

Why are you working in this industry? Managing investment portfolios for insurance companies is as much an art as it is finance. I love researching investment opportunities and how they fit in a portfolio while taking into consideration the investments structure, return, duration, risk, etc. Also, it’s important to remember the positive impact finance offers, namely providing the capital that funds ideas, the technology and businesses that improve our lives and the world around us.

What are three daily habits that have helped you to become successful?  Saying yes to opportunities, especially the ones that take me out of my comfort zone. Discover my “why” daily, because when you know your “why”, you can endure any “how.” Prioritize my mental and physical health, as a positive attitude and energy is contagious.

What was the most significant hurdle you had to overcome to get where you are? How would you address this hurdle today? Left a secure job at an investment company in DFW after 5 years to take an internship at my current company, Parkway. I knew it was the direction I wanted to go, despite the initial pay cut and “restart.” At the time, it was a very hard decision, yet it’s always important to look at the big picture and make decisions with your long-term goals in mind instead of focusing on what is most comfortable in the moment.

What is an accomplishment that shaped your career? Recently earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation after a thousand plus of hours of studying across 4 years. This credential is the most highly respected designation in the investment management profession.

What changes have you seen in Abilene during your career? What changes would you like to see? Love the growth we’ve seen downtown and the SoDA district, especially the patios, restaurants and all the places that foster community. This helps retain more young professionals and the talent needed to continue developing and growing Abilene. Would love to see more parks, bike/running trails to encourage more healthy lifestyles and relationships where can spend more time outside instead of screen time.

What was your first summer job? I worked as a cart boy/marshal at a golf course where I cleaned, charged, organized golf carts, and helped manage efficient play on the course. I learned how to communicate and build relationships in a more professional setting. Still one of my favorite jobs!

Where will we find you enjoying your hard-earned time off? Doing something active.  Most likely riding one of my bikes, shooting, kayaking, fishing, or out on the golf course.
