Tanell Smith-Blackmon

Age: 39

Business: MVM Real Estate Enterprises, LLC

Job title: Co-Founder

Why are you working in this industry?

Home ownership can create financial stability and generational wealth for a family. I was able to benefit from living in a generational home. Homeownership shouldn’t be so hard, so my business partner, Kasi Conners, and I wanted to take on the task of being a resource to give people the support they need. We are targeting low income and minority neighborhoods. We are so excited about the progress and partnerships made thus far and to come

What are three daily habits that have helped you to become successful?

1. Keep God first

2. Be the change that you desire to see

3. Have a plan that incorporates being true to yourself and serving others.

What is the best advise you have ever received ?

It is never too late to follow your dreams, so get started.

What was the most significant hurdle you had to overcome to get where you are? How would you address this hurdle today?

I had to overcome fear of the unknown. I lived in fear for a long time because I wanted to be safe. When I stopped caring what people thought of me and stepped out on faith, I was able to live in freedom. I also wanted to inspire and leave a legacy to be proud of. It’s really hard to tell students to follow their dreams when you are not living yours!

What is an accomplishment that shaped your career?

My greatest accomplishment is my son Jerrin. I want to have something of substance to leave him. I get the opportunity to show him what it means to accomplish a dream and pour into the community

What changes have you seen in Abilene during your career? What changes would you like to see

I have seen Abilene grow and more young professionals taking action in working together to make our city better. I would love to see more diversity and representation in our city. We have little to no black owned businesses in Abilene. We get to celebrate and experience many cultures in Abilene. I want to have places where others can experience OURS!
