Business: Texas Tech University Health Science & The Laura W. Bush Institute for Women's Health.
Job title: Assistant Director of External Relations
Why are you working in this industry? Being a professional fundraiser was never my career goal as a young kid. I didn’t know it was a career path. However, I discovered that development is incredibly rewarding with the potential to make an enormous impact within an organization and the community it serves. In addition to fundraising, I also have a strong background in marketing and community relations. Working in External Relations for TTUHSC and The Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health allows me to use all of these skills daily and provides me with a fulfilling, purpose-driven career.
What are three daily habits that have helped you to become successful?
I am always a student. I listen to TED talks or audiobooks on leadership on my drive to work.
I start the day with a task list of what I am wanting to achieve.
I focus on the most important tasks first thing in the morning.
Who is the person who most influenced you in business? My step-dad, Eddie, doesn't talk much, and when he does have something to say everyone listens. It's not what he has said but how he has lived his life that has been so remarkable to me. He has overcome great obstacles throughout his career and watching him continue to put in the hard work to build his dream as a minority business owner is nothing short of incredible. I have modeled my professional life to try to be half as successful as he is every day. I learned from Eddie that success takes work and that you should always treat people well and do your best.
What changes have you seen in Abilene during your career? What changes would you like to see? Our reimagined downtown is one of my favorite parts of Abilene. I would like to see it continue to grow and flourish!
Where will we find you enjoying your hard-earned time off? Exploring the Lone Star State! Texas is beautiful. I enjoy camping with my husband and two boys in our travel trailer at state parks. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting around a campfire with your family and watching the sunset.
Describe yourself in one word. Reliable
If you were to give one piece of advice to someone starting out in your field what would it be? A strong work ethic brings a lot of respect.
