NEWS AND HAPPENINGS FOR AYP

Amy Carnes Member Spotlight - June

June 12, 2017

Name: Amy Carnes

Where do you work?: American Cancer Society

What’s your job title/what do you do?: Development Manager of Distinguished Events. I’m the staff partner for the Abilene Cattle Baron’s Ball, Wichita Falls Cattle Baron’s Ball, and Finish the Fight Golf Classic.

Where are you from? Born and raised in Lubbock.

If you’re not from Abilene, how long have you lived in the area and what brought you here? We’ve been back a little over five years. My husband, Daryl, is from here so we moved back to be near his mom after we lost his dad to cancer.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Big Country? The people are the best! We’ve lived in eight cities across four states and Abilene has the friendliest people, hands down. We also love the location. It’s only a couple hours back to Lubbock or over to DFW. Both of our boys play club soccer in Arlington so it’s nice to be able to make that a day trip.

What do you do in your free time? If I do happen to find some time to myself between work, soccer and volunteering, I like to read, run, or just hang out with family and friends.

What does being an Abilene Young Professional mean to you? It means being part of a group of young people who want to be involved in our community. It’s a great opportunity to network with current and future leaders, meet new people, and get plugged into more volunteer opportunities.

Do you serve on any boards in the community or participate in any other groups? If so, what do you enjoy about your participation? I am the President-Elect of the Junior League of Abilene which I love because we get to help the children of Abilene all while being surrounded by the most incredible group of ladies. I also currently serve as the President of the Abilene Soccer Club, a Junior Achievement classroom volunteer, and as a Redcoat Ambassador for the Chamber. I absolutely love being involved in our community and hope that I am setting an example for my boys on the importance of not just being a bystander in life. It’s important to find what you’re passionate about, then get involved and make a difference.

What’s your favorite restaurant in Abilene? Abilene’s lucky to have so many good restaurants, but my favorite would probably have to be Copper Creek.

What’s the last book you read or what’s your favorite book? I’m currently working my way through the last few John Grisham novels I haven’t read yet.
