James Bridwell Member Spotlight - May

May 16, 2017

Name: James Bridwell

Where do you work? Sockdolager Brewing Co./ Noah Project

What’s your job title/what do you do? Head Brewer, Owner/ Primary Prevention Specialist

Where are you from? Savannah, GA

How long have you lived in Abilene and what brought you here? I moved to Abilene in 2010 to attend graduate school at Hardin Simmons University.

What is your favorite thing about living in Abilene? I attended undergrad in Atlanta, Ga, and the traffic was the absolute worst. I love that I can be anywhere in town in 10-15 minutes.

What do you do in your free time? Well, lately, my business partners and I don’t get very much of that, with all three of us working full time jobs outside of the brewery. But when I do I spend a good deal of that time reading...about beer. I’m kind of a one trick pony, but I suppose it makes sense since I’m a brewery owner. Beer’s what I’m passionate about.

What does being an Abilene Young Professional mean to you? Being an AYP, for me, means investing in a town that I believe in so that I don’t have to drive 3-4 hours to do the things I want to do. That’s how we see it at the brewery. Stop complaining about this town. If you want more bars, invest in the town and do it. If you want more festivals, start them. If you want less potholes, invest in the town and call your city officials. For me, being an AYP just means I got tired of complaining about Abilene and decided to try and help grow it.

What organizations in town do you choose to support and why? I choose to support Noah Project. Not only because I work there, but because they’re doing great work. They’re actually saving women, children and men from lifetimes of violence and abuse. It’s tangible change and has grown to matter a great deal to me.

What’s your favorite restaurant in Abilene? This one’s kind of a lay-up, but it’s gotta be Vagabond Pizza. The culture, the pizza, and...the beer. It’s all incredible, and honestly the most eclectic and fastest rotating beer selection in town despite their only having 8 taps. Plus Jason and Jess and everyone who works there are without doubt the best people in Abilene. Go eat there...tonight!

What’s the last book you read or what’s your favorite book? The last book I read? Classic Beer Styles Series #5: PORTER. See, I told you I was a one trick pony.
