Rosendo Contreras

Age: 38

Business: Hendrick Health

Job title: Director of Patient Safety

Why are you working in this industry? In short, I get to help people. I’ve always known I wanted to be in health care.  Nursing allowed me to utilize knowledge and skill to make a difference.

What are three daily habits that have helped you to become successful? A daily “wind down” that helps clear your mind before bed. 2) Get enough sleep. It is hard to be productive when you are not rested.  3) Choosing to have a good day no matter what the day throws at you. There’s always a choice.

Who is the person who most influenced you in business? Probably a little cliché, but it’s my parents.  They showed me a great work ethic early in my life.  They are the hardest working people I know.

What is the best advice you have ever received? Always try to respond rather than react to all situations. Taking a step back and formulating a response can keep you from saying or doing something that can’t be unsaid or un-done.

What was your first summer job? Outside of the family business, I worked at Subway making sandwiches. I think everyone should spend some time serving the public. It provides people skills that cannot be learned in any other setting. I loved that job!

Where will we find you enjoying your hard-earned time off? On a boat over some water somewhere.

If you were to give one piece of advice to someone starting out in your field what would it be? Don’t be afraid to ask questions!  No one goes into it knowing everything.
