Business: Community Foundation of Abilene
Job title: Finance Director
Why are you working in this industry? I love working in philanthropy because I have a front-row seat to watch the impact of philanthropy on community members and the nonprofits that serve them. Helping Community Foundation of Abilene donors make smart charitable investments to support causes they care about is always rewarding.
What are three daily habits that have helped you to become successful?
1. Reading keeps me knowledgeable about what’s going on in the world. Informed leaders make the best decisions.
2. I outline my daily goals and priorities at the start of each week.
Who is the person who most influenced you in business? My wife, Elyse. Her passion and commitment to work and volunteer endeavors are a great example for me. She always encourages me to learn new things, do more and think bigger.
What is the best advice you have ever received? My dad told me once that whatever amount of money you make; it will never be enough. As a young professional balancing work and family life, I understand that more than ever. If money is your only goal, you’ll never be truly fulfilled.
What do you want to be doing in 10 years? I hope to continue in my current role for many years. I truly have the best job in Abilene because I get to be part of a powerhouse team that works to help individuals meet their philanthropic goals.
Where will we find you enjoying your hard-earned time off? Outside. Ideally, you’ll find me hiking or camping in a state or national park with my family. I’ll be the one with the toddler strapped to my back.
If you were to give one piece of advice to someone starting out in your field what would it be? Put yourself out there and seize new opportunities. You may not know how to do everything, but you certainly won’t learn just waiting around.

Your family: My wife Elyse and I both grew up in Abilene, but we didn’t meet until after college. We’ve been married for 8 years and have one amazing son, William (20 months). My parents, Gina and Mark Lewis, have been married for 39 years. Their steadfast support and caring, problem-solving approach to parenting shaped me into the person I am today.
