Grant Seabourne

Age: 32

Business: First Financial Trust

Job title: Assistant Vice President & Relationship Manager

Why are you working in this industry? The two aspects of this industry that I appreciate the most are: (1) building long-term relationships with a diverse group of clients and their families, and (2) the ongoing pursuit of knowledge in financial planning and asset management.

What are three daily habits that have helped you to become successful? The three things that I strive to maintain as daily habits are: industry-related reading, maintaining an active lifestyle, and making a plan to accomplish daily and weekly goals.

Who is the person who most influenced you in business? My mom and dad worked hard to instill values in me beginning at a young age which have proven to be foundational to achieving success in my career.  They taught me that reputations take years to build, and seconds to destroy.  They showed me the importance of being honest; both with myself and others.  They showed me the importance of working hard and they taught me how to put others first.  I would not have been able to go very far without this foundation.

What was the most significant hurdle you had to overcome to get where you are? How would you address this hurdle today? As I was nearing the end of my senior year of college, I was struggling to find a sense of direction regarding my career choice.  That feeling of having all of this drive and yet no direction was at times, debilitating.  I had some experience in banking, so I took my first job at First Financial Bank.  After nearly ten years with the Company, I can honestly say that I have found a career path that is both challenging and fulfilling in a truly meaningful way.  If I could go back to that hurdle with the experience I have now, I would advise myself to not be afraid to try new things, and to talk to people in my circles who have been through it before – those people may be the most valuable resource for a young professional.

What is an accomplishment that shaped your career? Attainment of the designation of CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ has made a material difference in my career by enabling me to serve our clients with a higher level of expertise, and pursuit of the designation further reiterated how much I enjoy working in the field of financial planning and wealth management.

If you were to give one piece of advice to someone starting out in your field what would it be? At least every year, stop and take time to plan what concrete steps you’re going to take to make sure you keep moving forward.  Investing in yourself may not pay immediate dividends, but when opportunities arise, you will be prepared to take on new challenges.

Where will we find you enjoying your hard-earned time off? Oftentimes on weekends I can be found at the park or the zoo with my two-year old and six-month old.  If vacation days are involved, I’ll probably be mountain biking, kayaking on Lake Fort Phantom, or traveling with my wife, Erin.
