Ethan Kunkel

Age: 31

Business: County Waste Service

Job title: President

Why are you working in this industry? This is the question everyone wonders about a garbage man. The truth is, I am very particular about smells and likely have the weakest stomach of anyone in the industry. I have been blessed to lead an amazing team that does its job well, and more importantly, does a great job of keeping things clean. So many tasks going on behind the scenes of a waste company initially intrigued me. Later in my career, I realize that it’s the people that I get to lead that keep me here. I am blessed to lead the team that we have.

What are three daily habits that have helped you to become successful?

  1. Prayer: Not only beginning the day with it, but consistently throughout the day!

  2. Calling or meeting face-to-face instead of texting/emailing!

  3. Choose to serve my team and customers daily!

Who is the person who most influenced you in business? Dozens of top-level businessmen have influenced the shaping of my career, and I have been very fortunate to learn from the best. One individual has selflessly dedicated six years to ensure my success. I will forever be indebted to my friend and mentor, Alan Broxson.

What is the best advice you have ever received? First things first, second things never – Alan Broxson. Simply, focus on the task at hand.

What was the most significant hurdle you had to overcome to get where you are? How would you address this hurdle today? Most young leaders will face adversity early in their careers due to age, experience, performance, and many other factors. I was one to fall victim to this, which was a challenge indeed. I have always had the drive to accomplish, no matter the handicap.  I have learned to expect hurdles in my business, so I am not surprised when they arrive, therefore I try to attack from a place of faith and facts instead of emotion.
