Dillon Cobb

Age: 39

Business: Wealth Management and Financial Planning

Job title: Relationship Manager, CPA, CFP® Professional

Why are you working in this industry? I love helping make complicated issues simple to understand. I tell people often, if it’s too complicated to understand, you probably shouldn’t be doing it.

What are three daily habits that have helped you to become successful? Enjoy Life, Reading, Loving the people around me.

Who is the person who most influenced you in business? My dad, Don Cobb. We still talk every single day. He was a small business owner, a CPA with a traditional tax/audit practice for over 35 years.

What is the best advice you have ever received? Do not act like you know everything. In fact, act as if you know nothing and people are likely to share a lot more with you. You do not have to be the one with every answer, just know where to find the right answer.

What was the most significant hurdle you had to overcome to get where you are? How would you address this hurdle today? My biggest hurdle was/is self-doubt. Figuring out who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do daily took some time and effort. Like dating, sometimes you must persevere through the wrong fit before you know the right fit when you find it. I would seek a mentor/friend/counselor; one in whom I could trust and confide in.

What is an accomplishment that shaped your career? Not exactly an “accomplishment”, but my wife has helped shape me into a much more empathetic listener. I’m a better practitioner today because I am a better man. Essentially, I act as a financial “counselor” and empathy is a big deal for my clients.

If you were to give one piece of advice to someone starting out in your field what would it be? Do the hard things in life. Teddy Roosevelt said it best, “Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life.”
