Dayton Borger

Age: 31

Business: First Financial Bank

Job title: SVP – Commercial Lending

Why are you working in this industry? My favorite part of this business is building relationships with people and business owners within our community. I enjoy seeing all the different types of businesses we have here in Abilene and getting to work alongside these companies in their various stages of growth.

What are three daily habits that have helped you to become successful? I would say that my three daily habits would be waking up early, creating task lists for the day and week for better time management, and spending uninterrupted time with my family at the end of the day.

Who is the person who most influenced you in business? My father has influenced me the most in business primarily due to the work ethic he instilled in all of us. Although we are in completely different industries, his philosophy of hard work and doing things right the first time has stayed with me throughout my career.

What is the best advice you have ever received? The best advice I received was to not miss the little moments. Not only do we celebrate the small things with our customers, but I’m blessed to have a job that values family and allows me the flexibility to spend time with my family during these early years.

What was your first summer job? Although I unofficially worked with Dad many summers, my first official summer job was working at a water/iced tea store in Amarillo.

Where will we find you enjoying your hard-earned time off? When I’m not working, I enjoy playing golf and spending time outdoors. My favorite times are at our remote and very rustic cabin in Colorado where we spend quality time with family and friends.

If you were to give one piece of advice to someone starting out in your field what would it be? My advice for someone starting out would be to stick with it and work hard. I think it’s easy to get discouraged early on in your career as you aren’t in the role that you’d ultimately like to be in. I also believe sometimes the best opportunities aren’t what we initially have in mind. However, you learn so much early on in your career that oftentimes, hard work, commitment, and flexibility pay off in getting you where you want to go.
