Business: Goodwill - West Texas
Job title: Senior Director of Mission Services
Why are you working in this industry? My heart has always been in the nonprofit industry because I find joy in using my skills to help others succeed.
What are three daily habits that have helped you to become successful?
1. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask lots of them.
3. Read. Read. Read. The Bible. Fiction. Leadership books. Read.
What is the best advice you have ever received? Be the Buffalo. I’ve heard it said that when Buffalo and cattle are grazing and a storm is coming for them, cattle will turn to run away from the storm – leaving them in the storm longer. Buffalo will turn into the storm and charge it straight on – moving through the challenge quicker. When I don’t want to do something, I tell myself to “Be the Buffalo” and get it done. It’s the Robertson family motto.
What was the most significant hurdle you had to overcome to get where you are? How would you address this hurdle today? I used to get frustrated and avoid healthy work conflict and differing opinions. I now see this as iron sharpening iron. The actually process of sharpening iron is a rough one. Sparks fly. Lean into challenges and differences in opinions. I didn’t always do this, but navigating this is where things get good and great decisions are made.
Where will we find you enjoying your hard-earned time off? Sipping wine and watching the West Texas sunset with my family.
Describe yourself in one word. Optimist
If you were to give one piece of advice to someone starting out in your field what would it be? To all my fellow working momma’s. Surround yourself with other supportive working mom’s. Go to lunch together. Listen to one another. Encourage each other. Don’t have anyone? Give me a call.
