Business: Development Corporation of Abilene
Job title: Director of Business Development
Why are you working in this industry? I am passionate about attracting new companies and industries to strengthen all of Abilene. Working in economic development enables me to use my natural curiosity for the betterment of our community. It is an honor to play a small but critical role in the future of Abilene.
*What are three daily habits that have helped you to become successful?
1. Begin each day with a spirit of gratitude.
2. Surround myself with good people who hold me accountable - people who want the best for me as I do for them.
3. Play loud music on the way to work. I can’t listen to a song like “Stranglehold” by Ted Nugent and not get pumped up for the day.
1. Who is the person who most influenced you in business?
THE person? that’s a tough question. I have a few:
Katie New – Wife| Without her, I wouldn’t have had the opportunities that led me to this career. She provides great perspective and encouragement.
Misty Mayo – Boss and Mentor| She’s an empowering leader, a motivating force for good, and the best boss I have ever had.
Britton New – Brother| He’s the King of the Hustle. and an ultimate problem solver. “Be the solution, not the problem.”
James Kelsoe – Mentor| Consistency wins out over the long haul.
Phil Martin- Mentor| He’s the velvet hammer who shows me that words matter, and approach is everything.
What is the best advice you have ever received? Let small things be small things. Don’t let small inconveniences or frustrations steal your attention, time, or energy.
What do you want to be doing in 10 years? I am planning on doing more of the same--winning big projects for Abilene!
What was your first summer job? Running a small lawn care business in Fort Worth.
Where will we find you enjoying your hard-earned time off? I’ll be with my family and friends hopefully cooking, doing something creative, or being outside.
